US:Stocks sink on jobless claims, global trade

U.S. stocks were sharply lower on Thursday after disappointing U.S. economic news compounded the market’s worries about trade in China, European sovereign debt and continued unrest in the Middle East and North Africa.

The U.S. trade deficit widened more than forecast in January to the highest level in seven months as a surge in imports led by costlier crude oil overshadowed record exports.

Consumer confidence fell last week to the lowest level in a month as surging gasoline prices soured Americans’ outlook about their finances and the economy.
